The Donau Soja Congress is a leading international platform for advancing Europe’s food and protein security. Organised by Donau Soja, it brings together key decision-makers from across politics, agriculture, business, research and civil society to shape resilient protein value chains and strengthen cooperation across Europe.

From Dependency to Resilience

Europe’s agri-food system is increasingly exposed to geopolitical instability and climate change, leading to disruptions in global supply chains and extreme price volatility. Yet legumes account for only 3% of the EU’s harvested area, while the EU still imports more than 90% of its soya requirements.

This dependence makes protein supply a strategic issue for Europe’s food and feed security. At the same time, Europe has the land, knowledge and market capacity to strengthen its own protein production and value chains. To turn this potential into action, the Donau Soja Congress acts as a strategic platform, bringing together the political, economic and value-chain actors needed to translate European protein ambitions into resilient regional systems.

Focus Areas

‘Policy & Security’ explores how European protein policy can strengthen food and feed
security, examines the strategic role of regional cooperation, and looks at the infrastructure
and investment needed to reduce vulnerabilities across Europe’s protein supply. This focus is highly relevant for participants from government, public institutions, trade organisations, finance, and civil society.

‘Resilient Value Chains’ addresses the infrastructure, processing capacity, logistics and market uptake needed to
strengthen regional protein value chains, and examines how stronger partnerships can improve resilience from agricultural production through to the consumer. This focus offers crucial insights for participants from agribusiness, processing, feed, food production, retail, logistics, and trade.

‘Farmer Viability’ explores how protein crop production can remain productive and profitable under changing
climate and market conditions, focusing on diversification, resilience, productivity and long-term investment. This focus is especially relevant for participants from agriculture, farmer organisations, research, seed and input industries, insurance, and finance
